Julia Towers
“Dancers don’t need wings to fly.” - Ali Salami
Julia Towers, an 11-year-old competitive dancer from Tiverton, Rhode Island, has been dancing since she could walk. In fact, even breaking her leg at around 10 months old did not keep her from learning to dance around with a cast. To try and contain the constant twirls, leaps, and cartwheels around the house, Julia’s parents put her in her first dance class at the age of 3 at Breaking Pointe Dance Studio in Fall River, Massachusetts. This is where her passion was truly ignited and continues to burn. It was quickly understood that her skill level and enthusiasm were beyond that of the typical toddler.
A devotion to dance was crystal clear from her young start, and at the age of 5, she was selected to join her studio’s competitive team. At this early age, Julia was exposed to lessons in ballet, contemporary, lyrical, jazz, tap, hip-hop, and acro; truly establishing a love of dance and a natural connection deep in her soul to all styles. Being immersed in dance and life at the studio during the formative years of development have had a direct impact on the individual that Julia is and has become. Julia is a competitor, a teammate, a leader, a student and teacher - one who can follow instructions as well as effectively and clearly share her opinion.
Year one of competitive dancing for Julia focused on group performances, though by the age of 8, she was competing in multiple group performances in jazz, contemporary, lyrical and acro as well as contemporary solos. Throughout her years of competing, Julia has placed first multiple times, has been awarded scholarships to programs such as the Hollywood Summer Tour, along with various acceptances to national dance teams and conventions. In the summer of 2023, Julia participated in the Hollywood Summer Tour, where she was exposed to top choreographers Taya Wilde, Brian Friedman and Tyce Diorio. While in California on the tour, Julia also performed in a live performance at Universal CityWalk with Enola Bedard where she had a featured solo.
Through her musicality, Julia has an innate artistic ability to connect with all styles of dance that she learns and performs, as well as soak-up choreography. Also, being curious by nature, she is constantly seeking to try and learn as many other dance styles and techniques she can get exposure to. Where most of her initial training being more focused in classical ballet, Julia is most comfortable with contemporary and lyrical performances. Though, over the last few years, the ballerina has very much enjoyed turning into a skilled hip-hop and acro dancer as well. Julia is a hard worker who thrives on challenges and outdoing herself in each and every attempt looking to improve. Julia is inspired each day by her teachers, teammates, and of course those that she follows on social media platforms like Alex Wong, Enola Bedard, and Kinley Cunningham.
Thankfully, Julia is confident that good things come in small packages, as she has experienced some teasing from peers in the past related to her petite frame. Surrounding herself with encouraging friends, family, and fellow dancers creates an environment of positive spirits and conveys a positive attitude - a focus for Julia that has guided her success emotionally, physically, and mentally. Julia is often looked upon at school, dance and within her personal relationships as the one who can lift up others during difficult times.
At such a young age, Julia has achieved much success in a short amount of time with limited exposure. She looks forward to all the future opportunities and challenges she can take on next in the dance world, as there is so much more for her to attempt, experience, and accomplish. She is ready to embark on that next journey. Julia’s goal is to be a professional dancer on a concert stage, Super Bowl, or Broadway – anywhere her artistic talents can be performed with the passion she knows how to exhibit and inspire. With her natural talent, hard work ethic, passion, versatility, and ability to learn quickly, Julia is committed to continue to take flight as a dancer.
